Methods for Publishing Spatial Data on the Internet

Graphic Snapshots (maps)

Web servers can publish static snapshots of pre-generated maps using formats such as:

• GIF Images
• GeoTIFF. Arc/INFO 7.1 and ArcView 3 support GeoTIFF.
• CGM Images
• DWG or DWF AutoCAD Images

Snapshots allow easy, widespread access. Raster snapshots like GIF, have limited resolution and don't allow pan, zoom, or interactive use. Vector formats like CGM, DWG and DWF maintain all the original detail, allowing plug-in viewers to pan and zoom. Still, they are simple images of maps.
